Nonito Donaire was presented with the Diamond belt from WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles, California.
Donaire surprised everyone by defeating previously unbeaten Irishman Ryan Burnett, as part of the World Boxing Super Series tournament in the bantamweight division, in which he has not fought for seven years.
Donaire promised “more to come” to boost his career. He said that overcoming Ryan Burnett in Scotland was like winning his first championship. Schaefer said it was an unprecedented victory when Donaire dropped two weight divisions to win the 118-pound title.

Schaefer called Donaire a future Hall of Famer in the presence of the executive director of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, Ed Brophy. For his part, Donaire told Mauricio Sulaiman that he is thrilled to be a WBC champion and said he will always uphold the values of integrity and loyalty in accordance with its principles.
