Soon after Donnie Nietes’ knockout win over Juan Carlos Reveco last month, the flyweight mentioned that he was sure that a move up to the super flyweight division was his next move, telling Rappler:
“I am decided already. There are no doubts, I want to move up to 115.”
Despite that proclamation, though, Nietes’ team is still discussing whether or not that should be the next move for the 35-year-old Filipino fighter — but there’s no question that there’s a more stacked division awaiting him at 115lbs, with several thrilling match-ups awaiting against the likes of Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, Juan Francisco Estrada, Jerwin Ancajas and others.
One fighter in particular that Nietes could potentially take on is Roman Gonzalez, with Nietes expected to be given consideration for a shot at the WBO title that Naoya Inoue will be vacating. That could shape up to be a really interesting match-up, if Gonzalez still has something left in the tank. Gonzalez hasn’t fought since getting flattened by Sor Rungvisai last September.
But that brings us to another interesting little tidbit, with trainer Freddie Roach saying he’s been contacted by Gonzalez, telling RingTV:
“Chocolatito, he called me, and I hope I see him soon,” said Roach, hinting that he may train Gonzalez for those fights.
Do you think it’s time for Nietes to move up and challenge some of the top super flyweights? And if so, what fight would you most like to see him in?
