The kid from Cotabato Del Sur was a good fighter when he got trained in General Santos City. Romero Duno knocked out all his Pilipino opponents because their skill level was average. Duno’s advantage was that he had heavier hands than his rival fighters. He also had the will to win and get into a beast mode to destroy everyone in front of him.
He was in excellent shape when San Man promotions sent him over to Russia. Mikhail Alexeev had the same weight, power and granite chin like Duno. The only difference is that Alexeev had more experience than Romero Duno. He lost to Mikhail Alexeev by unanimous decision. Duno’s posture was muscularly tight. Which means he easily burned a lot of energy during the early rounds. When a fighter is not physically and mentally relaxed, the body builds a lot of lactic acid. This is the tired sensation your muscles feel when you exercise. Duno was already tired in the first 2 rounds. Therefore Duno wasn’t 100% all through out the big brawl in Russia.
When Dexter Tan and JC Mananquil who is the Ceo and manager of San Man promotions had a change in plan with Duno’s training. They embarked in a journey that would define Romero Duno’s career in the world of boxing. After defeating Christian “Chimpa” Gonzalez, Oscar De La Hoya signed him up for Golden Boy Promotions. This was a result of training with a 3 time WBC world champion, Rodel Mayol and the conditioning coach, Stanly Godinez. The recipe for an excellent team is to have chemisty. They had it all, Duno and Rodel spoke the same dialect of Visaya and Ilonggo. This new partnership and training all started in the Wild Card Gym. An environment where you learn from the best of the best. The elite fighters and coaches come here to learn from the man himself, Freddie Roach.
Romero Duno, Rodel Mayol, Stanly Godinez and Ed De La Vega DDS team turned into a family. The MG staff was able to upgrade Duno’s skill from a B+ to an A+ fighter. This literally happened over a couple of months through hard work, repetitive coaching and listening by the champ himself. Rodel would always say “relax lang ang balikat” which means relax your shoulders. The new Duno is more disciplined and loose but still “Ruthless”. His foot work for offense and defense is excellent. He is always in a position to throw a jab and a power right cross and still have balance to cover up. He knows when to attack, step back and come off the ropes or move laterally out of harms way.
His 61 second KO against Yardly Armenta is the reason why he is headlining the fight this Thursday at Fantasy Spring Casino. This is presented by Golden Boy Promotions. Romero Duno is 22 years old with a record of 16-1-14 knock outs. Stands 5 ft 7 has an Orthodox stance, 82% Ko, 62 rounds and a desire to move up in ranking and compete with boxers with title belts around their waist. Duno will face Gilberto “El Flaco” Gonzalez from Mexico. He also has an Orthodox stance with a record of 26-4-0 with 22Ko’s. 73% KO who dropped Mercito Gesta in round 2 when they fought in The Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas on April 2, 2017. This is by far Romero Duno’s Toughest battle. This is what he said in his interview at the Wild Card Gym; ” Duguan etong laban na eto”. This will be a bloody fight because both fighters are among the elite in the world of boxing, they have a high percentage knock out ratio and both of them have a lot to prove to all the champions out there. Champions like Jorge Linares, Gervonta Davis and the number one pound per pound fighter Vasily Lomachenko who Ko’d Jorge Linares with a left hook to the liver on the 10th round.
