Dustin Poirier says he’s ‘not answering the phone’ unless offered title shot

UFC lightweight contender Dustin Poirier was finally able to settle the score with Eddie Alvarezon Saturday night. Stemming from their first fight that ended in a No Contest due to illegal strikes from Alvarez, Poirier managed to get the job done in their rematch on Saturday in Calgary via a second-round TKO win.

A win over a former champion like Alvarez puts Poirier in a good position for the next title shot, which is why “The Diamond” says it is the only fight he would be entertaining next.

“They already know what I’m going to say: If it’s not a title fight, I’m not answering the phone,” Poirier told MMAjunkie Radio.

“I’m just trying to enjoy my life and my family now. I started this camp injured from my Justin Gaethje fight. I’m not in a big rush. They’ll call me when they’re ready.”

“It’s really up to them for an offer,” he added. “It has to make sense. … Money talks.”

Poirier, however, is willing to be reasonable about it, considering that Conor McGregor has beeninserted back into the title picture.

“The best-case scenario would be Conor and Khabib fight, and I fight the winner at the beginning of next year.”

Poirier currently holds a record of 24-5 (with 1 NC and 19 wins by stoppage). His last three outings were all awarded with post-fight bonuses for Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night.
