Dustin Poirier’s victory at UFC on FOX 29 was not without cost.
“The Diamond” defeated Justin Gaethje in the main event of the card Saturday in Glendale, Ariz., to cement himself as one of the top lightweights in the world. However, he did not walk away unscathed. In fact, he didn’t walk away without the use of crutches.
On Sunday night, Poirier posted photos of his badly damaged leg right leg. Gaethje attacked the leg with hard kicks early and often in the fight and at certain points Poirier seemed to be in a ton of pain.
About 24 hours later, the leg appears badly swollen and bruised.
Poirier thanked Gaethje for “the battle” and said he was a “warrior” in another post. The bout will likely be on the short list of top contenders for Fight of the Year. Poirier ended up finished Gaethje in the fourth round at Gila River Arena.
Afterward, he said he wanted a title shot against Khabib Nurmagomedov next. Everything will have to be on hold in the interim, though, as that gnarly leg injury heals.
