President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday congratulated boxing icon and Senator Manny Pacquiao for bagging the World Boxing Association world welterweight title after knocking down Argentinian boxer Lucas Matthysse in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
“I would like to congratulate Senator Manny Pacquiao for giving us pride and bringing the Filipino nation together once more,” Duterte said.
The President also called Pacquiao “one of the greatest boxers of all time.”
“You have proven time and again that you are not just a public servant, but one of the greatest boxers of all time. This win will surely cement, yet again, your position and legacy in boxing’s Hall of Fame,” he said.
Pacquiao scored a seventh round technical knockout victory over Matthysse, his 60th victory.
Duterte wished Pacquiao well and hoped he can continue to serve as an inspiration to many.
“May you continue to inspire Filipinos not only in boxing but also in the public service,” he said.
“Daghang salamat, Manny! You are truly the People’s Champ!” the President added.
Duterte was in the audience at the Axiata Arena together with his son Sebastian “Baste” and Special Assistant to the President Christopher “Bong” Go.
‘Thank you for the honor’
Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque also congratulated Pacquiao on his victory.
“With Senator Emmanuel ‘Manny’ Pacquiao’s victory against Lucas Matthysse for the WBA welterweight belt, the Palace is one with the Filipino people in celebrating this tremendous feat,” he said in a statement.
“We thank our Pambansang Kamao for not only bringing honor and glory to our flag and country but once again uniting Filipinos here and abroad with his display of courage, tenacity and will power. Mabuhay ka, Manny! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!” Roque added. —KG, GMA News
