After seeing boxing’s highs last night, it’s only fitting that the weekend give us the lows as well. Eduard Gutknecht, who collapsed following his Friday decision loss to George Groves and was rushed to the hospital for brain surgery, has reportedly been placed into an artificial coma.
The coma is “standard” for such procedures; you may recall that Nick Blackwell spent a week in one after losing to Chris Eubank Jr, so the optimists among you have some backing.
Gutknecht (30-5-1, 13 KO), who turns thirty-five next March, had nothing for Groves in their bout, but observers posted that he did not present any red flags until afterwards and appeared lucid during the scorecards. His condition worsened in the dressing room, at which point he was hauled out via ambulance.
We here at Bad Left Hook will be keeping Gutknecht in our thoughts; we’ve seen more than enough tragedy this year.
