Eleider Alvarez believes Adonis Stevenson fight won’t happen

Alvarez been Adonis Stevenson’s mandatory since 2015

The saga of Eleider Alvarez and Adonis Stevenson has been one of boxing’s more bizarre storylines in recent years, with the WBC apparently dead-set on Stevenson never making a mandatory defense. It looked as though they would finally duke it out sometime this winter, likely January 27th in Quebec, but Alvarez told TVA Sports that he doesn’t think it’s happening.

Alvarez (23-0, 11 KO) says he feels “disrespected” by the sanctioning body, citing the fact that they posted a poster for Adonis Stevenson vs. Badou Jack on their Instagram page, and it’s hard to argue with him. He has not yet received a step-aside offer, but claims he’ll make a decision soon.

Regardless of what you think of Alvarez’s style, he has absolutely been dicked over by the WBC, who have spent the last week or so taking a hatchet to their own credibility. Alvarez has been the mandatory challenger for two years. My expectations for sanctioning bodies’ ethics are already rock-bottom and yet the WBC keeps finding new and inventive ways to limbo beneath them.
