Former Mexican world champion Juan Francisco “Gallo” Estrada set phaser on to stun in defeating compatriot, Victor “Spock” Méndez, who didn’t come out for eighth round, at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Estrada, who was the shorter man lost the first two rounds. But then closed the distance, landing cleanly and frequently to both head and body. Mendez, who had started as the aggressor, faded and Estrada who had initially been counter punching, became aggressor, often landing at will. For that reason, the corner of Méndez wisely and humanely decided to stop fighting at the end of the seventh round, as he was suffering a battering.
With this victory, Estrada improves his record to 38-3-0, 26 knockouts, while Méndez left the ring with a record of 28-4-2, 20 knockouts.
