Thales Leites won’t be the only fighter to retire from the sport after UFC Sao Paulo.
Veteran lightweight Evan Dunham, booked to meet Francisco Trinaldo at the Fight Night card on Sept. 22 in Brazil, announced on his social media Monday that his upcoming bout will be his final one.
”September 22 will be my last fight,” Dunham wrote. “I can retire from the sport that I love with my head held high. I know that I never held anything back while in the cage and September 22 will be no different. My goals and priorities have shifted throughout the years and I am ready to concentrate on building my gym, as well as any new opportunities that come my way.”
Dunham (18-7-1) enters the cage looking to rebound from a TKO loss to Olivier Aubin-Mercier in April, which snapped a fight-five unbeaten streak dating back to 2014, with wins over Rodrigo Damm, Ross Pearson, Joe Lauzon and Rick Glenn and a draw with Beneil Dariush.
The 36-year-old veteran has battled some of the best in the world since joining the UFC in his eighth professional fight in 2009, going 11-7-1 inside the Octagon.
”I have gone toe 2 toe with many of the worlds best competitors and I am truly grateful for this,” Dunham wrote. “My passion for Jiu Jitsu will continue to be a driving force in my gym and at select Jiu Jitsu competitions. I want to thank my family, friends and fans for all of your support throughout the years.”
