Texas’ Brandon “The Heartbreaker” Figueroa scored the most important victory of his career after defeating Mexico’s Luis “Panterita” Nery by KO in 7 rounds to become WBA and WBC unified Super Bantamweight Champion in a fight held on Saturday night at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
As expected, the Figueroa-Nery fight was a candidate for fight of the year and the seven-round bout did not disappoint any fan, it went back and forth until the final bell.
The first three rounds presented a ferocious Mexican, connecting punches inside, to the stomach and with good mobility, indicating that the Mexican’s firepower would be a big difference, but from the fourth round on, things changed and the Texan increased the pressure like a tractor. He began to throw punches and combinations everywhere like a machine until the seventh round when he connected a left hand to the Mexican’s ribs, who buckled without being able to overcome the protection count at 2:18 minutes of the round.
With this victory, Figueroa left his record at 23 fights, 22 wins, 1 draw, and 17 KOs. Nery has a record of 32 fights, 31 wins, 1 loss and 24 KOs.
Once Figueroa was announced as the winner, he immediately formalized his next fight against Stephen Fulton, WBO-122 lbs. Champion, in a match scheduled for September.
