“I trust Virgil Hunter. I know that his job is to protect me. His decision to stop the fight in the second round was the right one. I don’t remember what happened after the first knockdown. I don’t remember what happened in the break between rounds, I don’t remember if (Virgil) was saying something to me or not,” light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara told Fightnews.com® after his second round loss to WBC world champion Adonis Stevenson.

Are you OK? Healthy?

I’m fine. Not even one stitch needed. Mentally, I’m not OK. I lost so quickly, after so much training. It hurts because I felt that I did everything to be world champion.

Describe the first round…

I think I started OK. I was moving, not letting him close to punch with his left hand, which was job one in training camp. Maybe I even felt too confident too quickly. I wanted to hit him, get him the message that I’m here to win. He slipped my punch and hit me with straight left… and the fight was basically over. Stevenson hits really hard.

Three years ago, Stevenson also connected in the first round. But in 2014, after the first round knockdown you spent 12 rounds in a great battle with Superman.

Different punch. Completely different. After this punch, I lost my balance for a long time, was out of it. This is why I will not question my trainer’s decision to stop the fight. I trust Virgil Hunter. I know, that his job is to protect me. His decision to stop the fight in the second round was a right one. I don’t remember what happen after the first knockdown. I don’t remember what happened in the break between rounds, I don’t remember if (Virgil) was saying something to me or not. I will need a couple of more days to watch this fight. Not ready yet.

Virgil Hunter suggested that maybe it’s time to stop fighting in the light heavyweight division. Maybe try to go up, join the cruiserweights.

Too early to make any decisions about my future. I want to be back, fight again. That’s for sure.
