This Tuesday at the Ex Hacienda de Cortés in the Coyoacán Delegation in Mexico City was the scene of the WBC’s traditional “Coffee Tuesday.” The meeting that was full of memories to celebrate the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Olympic Games in Mexico 1968. One of the athletes competing in that event was legendary heavyweight champion George Foreman, who won the Olympic gold medal.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman stated, “This day has a very special meaning because it is necessary to take a few minutes to remember the glory of having been the venue for a sporting event as important as the Olympic Games. George Foreman, a man who represents the best of boxing, a life of success and service that has been an example of overcoming and surrender, but above all of love to God.“Foreman is undoubtedly one of the favored champions of my dad, not just for the feats above the ring, but for his human quality. He has been a great representative of the organization and what boxing is. Today I want to give him a very special gift that has been kept for more than 20 years, a gift that my dad wanted to give him, the green belt and third generation gold.”
Foreman also remembered Don José Sulaimán with great appreciation because as he said Don Jose was the one who had faith in him and gave him the opportunity to fight for the world title against Joe Frazier, a fight that he remembers as the most important of his career.
During his tour of Mexico City, there have been thousands of expressions of affection for Foreman who expressed his love and respect for Mexico.The ceremony was also attended by Horacio De la Vega, Director of the Sports Institute of Mexico City and Manuel Negrete, Mayor of Coyoacán.
