Adonis Stevenson’s health has continued to improve following a knockout loss in December.
Stevenson lost his WBC light heavyweight title in an 11th-round defeat to Oleksandr Gvozdyk, which took place in Quebec. After the fight, the former world boxing champion lost consciousness and went to the hospital, where he was placed into a medically induced coma. He woke up from it about three weeks later.
His girlfriend Simone God released a statement on Stevenson’s website Saturday morning with a health update. She said Stevenson has taken a few steps and is working towards walking by himself, and that he can now talk, too.
“Last month, I disclosed that Adonis had woken up and was healing from his injury in the private company of his family and his dedicated medical team,” God wrote. “Today, I am happy to share that after months of grueling workouts and physical therapy, Adonis has taken his first few steps, and is working towards walking independently.
“Additionally, I am happy to share that Adonis is beginning to verbally communicate and is able to speak to our family, friends and his medical team.”
God said she is confident Stevenson will make a full recovery.
“It has been a true gift to watch his health improve and we are grateful for every advancement he has made,” she wrote. “Adonis is a world champion in the ring and continues to exhibit strength and perseverance in his rehabilitation.”
Stevenson’s loss to Gvozdyk snapped a 17-fight unbeaten streak, which included one draw. He held the WBC light heavyweight title for more than five years. Stevenson is also the former The Ring light heavyweight champion.
