In a fight that was sloppy and often ugly, Javier Fortuna outpointed Sharif Bogere over 10 rounds in a lightweight matchup, kicking off a Showtime tripleheader from Carson, California.

Fortuna (34-2-1, 23 KO) won on unanimous scores of 96-93 from all three judges. BLH also had the fight 96-93 for the 29-year-old Dominican fighter.

The fight wasn’t particularly hard to score, as Bogere seemed to have a slight advantage in the first five rounds, winning three of them, but things came apart for him after that. Bogere (32-2, 20 KO) was cut on a clash of heads in the sixth round, and later was ruled down in that same frame. The knockdown call was questionable at best, and seemed to be more about the fighters getting tangled up.

Fortuna, a former secondary titleholder at both 126 and 130, said after the fight that he’d like to face Gervonta Davis, Vasiliy Lomachenko, or “any of them,” meaning the top fighters around the 135-pound division. Davis is currently at 130, but the thought is that he’s going to have to officially move up sooner than later, and Lomachenko, of course, has two belts at 135 and is considered by many to be the top pound-for-pound fighter in the sport.

It was the first really serious fight that Bogere had been in since his March 2013 loss to Richar Abril, and tonight’s result probably sticks him on the back burner again. At 30, it seems we’ve probably seen the best Bogere can do, and that it’s simply a bit below world level.
