Frankie Edgar on early sparring sessions after Ortega KO loss: There were no ‘head shots’

Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar received a medical suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) after his knockout loss to Brian Ortega at UFC 222, and was expected to have no physical contact in training until April 13.

But Edgar, 36, almost slipped up when he revealed that he had already started sparring three times a week ahead of his upcoming fight with Cub Swanson on April 21 in Atlantic City.

Edgar corrected himself on social media, stating that his sparring does not include head shots and is not in violation of his ‘no contact’ medical suspension.

Edgar, like former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping, will return to the Octagon just a few weeks after having been violently finished in a headlining bout.

Just three weeks after he was choked unconscious by Georges St-Pierre, Bisping was brutally KO’d by Kelvin Gastelum in a short notice fight at UFC Shanghai.

Let’s hope that Edgar, an MMA veteran of thirteen years, doesn’t suffer a similar fate next month.

UFC Fight Night 128, which features Edgar vs. Swanson in the co-main event, takes place next month, April 21 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
