GABE ROSADO TO RETURN EARLY NEXT YEAR; WANTS JACOBS, WILL ALSO FIGHT ANDRADE

Boxing Talk
By G. Leon

Greg Leon: Congrats on your recent victory over Glen Tapia.  Can you give us some thoughts on your performance?
Gabe Rosado: “It was a solid performance. I was healthy and I refocused, and I knew that it was a fight that I just couldn’t win, I needed to win impressively and get the knockout so I’m glad everything came out as planned.

Greg Leon: Do you view that as a career saving victory in terms of being able to compete at the highest level?
GR: Absolutely. That was the point. I had to take this guy out and let everybody know that when I’m fighting at my full potential I’m a different beast to mess with. It was just a matter of focusing again and getting healthy and that’s just what I did.”
GL: When are you hoping your next fight takes place?
Gabriel Rosado: “I don’t know we’ll see. I know Golden Boy was telling me they’d like to get me on in the first quarter of next year. After watching the Danny Jacobs fight I would love to get a fight with him. We’ll see if that happens in the future, I’m pretty sure it will. Right now I’m just going to stay in the gym and we’ll see what I get.”
GL: What did you think about the Jacobs-Arias fight?
GR: “Honesstly I think that he got the win, but a guy like Arias is the type of opponent where you have to take him out. I know Arias was undefeated, but he’s never fought at that elite level and when guys step up to the plate at that level you’ve got to make a statement and I thought it was a boring fight. He should have knocked him out.”
GL: I spoke with Demetrius Andrade recently and he said he’d like a fight with you next to get further acclimated to the middleweight division…
GR: (cutting in) “That was another boring fight, another snoozer.”
GL: How do you feel about a fight with you and Adrade?
GR: “Either or. I just feel like at the end of the day I think people miss the point of what boxing is and boxing is the entertaining business. If the guy can’t entertain you then it’s whatever and I think that’s what keeps me relevant. Regardless of win, lose or draw I get still get people talking about my fights. My fights are memorable, you don’t really go to the gym and hear anybody talk about that Demetrius Andrade fight because it was boring. I think if I would have a boring fight or a decision with Tapia people would have probably been like I don’t know about Gabe, I think he’s done. But the performance I put on puts me right back into the mix. I think Jacobs missed an opportunity in his first fight on HBO to make sure people want to see him again, but Jacobs is the fight I want the most right now.”

GL:Boxing is an entertainment business, but there’s always politics attached to it. You’re a veteran in the game so you know how it goes, would you be surprised if Jacobs wound up getting the winner of Lemieux-Saunders while a guy like you is pushed in the direction of Andrade, who many would think is the toughest fight of the bunch?
GR: “I wouldn’t be surprised at all. It’s crazy to me that certain guys still get this exposure, I thought it was about more than getting wins, it’s about being entertaining. Jacobs fought in New York and that place was empty, it wasn’t a sold out arena. When I fought Lemieux in New York at the Barclay’s Center nobody knew who Lemiuex was, it was his first time fighting in the United States and the Barclay’s Center was packed that night. Fans know when they come to see me fight they’re going to get their monies worth. I even know what the ratings were for the fight, I get deep into this man, the ratings were like 1.2 million, Jacobs did much less and couldn’t sell in his hometown, but if you put me and Danny in a fight I think it’s going to sell out and it’s going to do great on TV, but I do think there’s a good possibility they’re going to call me with Andrade.”
GL: How does that fight play out if they do?
GR: “I think it’s a good fight because he’s a southpaw and he’s slick, but he will stand in the pocket and exchange. He’s really not like a Lara or Monroe southpaw that’s on his bicycle. He’s going to be there and it’s going to be a give and go situation.”

GL: You are more experienced as a middleweight than he is.
GR: “Definitely, and he ain’t fight no world class boxer on HBO. He fought a young athlete who had never been on that level, hadn’t really fought anybody and he wasn’t really impressive at all. He could have turned up the heat and gotten him out of there. But Andrade is a good fight for me, I like the fight. Years ago we were in the same camp and we sparred for a week, I wasn’t even in shape but I got a feel for him. The work wasn’t intense, it was two guys working, it’s not like we were banging it out, but I definitely got a feel for him.”

GL: Who do you like in Lemiuex-Saunders?
GR: “I think Saunders outboxes Lemieux. Lemieux only has one gear. He’s just going to punch hard all the way, Saunders can brawl, Saunders can box, Saunders can move and tie him up. I think he’ll let Lemieux punch away and just pick at him and win the fight on points.”
GL: Closing thoughts?
GR: “I appreciate all the fans showing their support, it’s comeback season man, make sure to watch my next fight whoever it is because you know it’s going to be entertaining.”
