Yordenis Ugas and Ray Robinson will meet on February 17 in an IBF welterweight eliminator, live on Showtime as an undercard fight on the Danny Garcia-Brandon Rios card from Las Vegas.
Ugas (20-3, 9 KO) has been on a strong run over the past two years. Back in 2012, he lost a ShoBox upset to Johnny Garcia, and in 2014 lost two fights to Emmanuel Robles and Amir Imam. But after sitting out 2015, the Cuban has come alive, and has begun to live up to his prospect expectations.
In 2016, he took the “0” from both Jamal James and Bryant Perrella in back-to-back fights, and has since beaten Levan Ghvamichava, Nelson Lara, and most recently, Thomas Dulorme on the Mayweather-McGregor undercard.
Robinson (24-2, 12 KO) lost fights to Brad Solomon and Shawn Porter back in 2009 and 2010, respectively, but has gone on his own unbeaten streak since then. He’s won 13 straight fights, plugging away and trying to claw his way into relevance in a loaded division.
Last year, Robinson fought three times, beating Edwin Palacios, Claudinel Lacerda, and Breidis Prescott.
Ugas-Robinson will open the Showtime broadcast, which is a tripleheader including the 168-pound title rematch between David Benavidez and Ronald Gavril.
Off TV fights will include Lionell Thompson vs Edwin Rodriguez, Ladarius Miller vs Argenis Mendez, and the pro debut of acclaimed amateur Joe Spencer.
