In an unexpected turn of events, IBF welterweight titlist Kell Brook will jump two weight classes to take on middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.
Take that, Amir Khan!
In a rather stunning announcement it is now being reported that welterweight titleholder Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) will be the next British fighter to jump up two weight divisions to take on perhaps the most avoided fighter in the sport – Gennady Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs). I’ve got to give it to Brook here – he either is taking his domestic rivaly with Amir Khan to a dramatically unhealthy level, or he really just has a huge set of stones on him. Either way, Golovkin-Brook is scheduled for September 10th at London’s O2 Arena, airing live on Sky Sports Box Office.
“This is the fight and the moment I have been waiting for for some time,” said Brook, who will retain his status as the IBF’s 147lb-champ.
“This is the ultimate fight, one of the biggest international fights the country has seen in many years – you have seen some huge names run from GGG but I’m running to him. I’m a ‘Special’ fighter and I will show the world on September 10.”
Of course this means that the much talked about fight between Golovkin and Chris Eubank Jr. won’t be happening in the near future, despite the Eubank’s talking up their desire to fight the middleweight wrecking ball ad nauseam. But when push came to shove,Golovkin publicly questioned why the Eubank’s wouldn’t put pen to paper. Make of that what you will.
“I’m very excited to be fighting in front of the great British boxing fans and promise another ‘Big Drama Show’ against Kell Brook,” said Golovkin.
Ticket on-sale dates and prices for the fight are expected to be released next week.
