George Groves may be on the mend for the broken jaw he suffered in his title-winning knockout of Fedor Chudinov, but he’s keeping his career moving. Earlier today, the World Boxing Super Series confirmed on its Twitter page that “Saint George” is the first super middleweight to officially join the tournament.

The organization also teased that more names would be announced “next week.” Kalle Sauerland recently floated the prospect of Erik Skoglund and Mikkel Kessler signing up.
Groves (26-3, 19 KO) finally struck gold in his fourth title shot in May, extending his current winning streak to five since his narrow loss to Badou Jack. Still just 29, he’s an excellent addition to the lineup, even if he is currently the only member.
The cruiserweight bracket is slightly more complete at the moment, featuring Murat Gassiev, Mairis Briedis, and Krzysztof Wlodarczyk. Dmitry Kudryashov, Briedis’ mandatory challenger, has expressed interest in joining as well.
