WBA super middlweight champion and World Boxing Super Series finalist George Groves has acknowledged on social media this morning that he’ll be undergoing surgery to repair his dislocated left shoulder. Groves suffered the injury in the final round of his fight with Chris Eubank Jr. just over a week ago.
Groves said despite the operation he expects to be fully fit to fight in by this July, and plans on petitioning the WBSS to push back it’s planned finals match so that he can participate.
The WBSS super middleweight finals match is currently scheduled to take place on June 2nd, but Groves seems hopeful that tournament organizers will be amendable to delaying the fight a month to give him time to heal.
At this point there’s no word on whether or not the WBSS would actually be willing to delay their scheduled finals, but it would be nice to see the rightful contestant take part in the match as Groves has earned his way there.
Meanwhile, his opponent Callum Smith would appear to be ready to go for the June 2 date after dominating his semifinal’s late-replacement Nieky Holzken over the weekend.
