Germaine de Randamie made history on Saturday night at UFC 208 by becoming the inaugural UFC women’s featherweight champion. The Dutch fighter fought former women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm in a five-round contest, where she ended up winning via unanimous decision.
The fight was marred by a little controversy, when de Randamie threw and landed punches on Holm after the bell that signaled the round’s end had already sounded. It happened on two separate instances during the fight, where presiding referee Todd Anderson did not take a point away from de Randamie.
For Holm, who suffered her third straight loss, those punches were deliberately thrown.
“It was after the bell. I heard the bell, I stopped and she threw it,” Holm said during the post-fight press conference. “It wasn’t like the last punch of a combination when the bell rang. It was intentional.”
But from her end, “The Iron Lady” says she intends to erase the negative stigma that suddenly surrounded her big win. So much so that she is willing to give Holm another crack, just to clear the air.
De Randamie released a lengthy statement on social media, via her management team
No timetable has been set for de Randamie’s next fight. During her Octagon interview with Joe Rogan, she revealed that she has torn ligaments on her hand, which she needs surgery on.
