First announced in August, a clash between WBA “Super” super featherweight champion Gervonta Davis and multi-division titlist Abner Mares looks likely to go down early next year. The Ring reports that a deal “is all but in place” for the two to go at it on either Fox or Showtime; there’s no specific date yet, but Davis claims it’ll happen in January.

Davis (20-0, 19 KO) fought just once this year, an April drubbing of Jesus Cuellar that saw “Tank” down his foe three times in three rounds. He has spent the rest of his time feuding with Floyd Mayweathergetting arrested for a barfight, and jawing with Tevin Farmer on Twitter.

Mares (31-3-1, 15 KO) has been out of action since putting in a solid effort in his rematch against Leo Santa Cruz last June. The skills look like they’re still there, but this will be his featherweight debut, and considering he’s 32 and made his name at bantamweight, the odds are definitely against him here.

Fingers crossed Davis faces either Farmer or “regular” WBA champ Alberto Machado once this is over with, though I recognize that those two matchups make far too much sense to be feasible.
