Filipino Marlon Tapales suddenly created quite a stir in the fight community when he became the new World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight champion following a 11th round TKO win over former Thai champ Pungluan Sor Singyu in Ayutthaya Thailand on Thursday (July 28).
He joins two three other Filipinos Nonito Donaire, Johnriel Casimero, Donnie Nietes as well as female boxer Gretchen Abaniel in the honor roll of current world champions.
The 24-year-old southpaw is a native of Tubod, Lanao del Norte and has “Maranding Nightmare” for a moniker although it is seldom used in fight posters and ring introduction
The fight against Sor Singyu was his first attempt at a world title. Before this, he won the WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight crown, which is just regional boxing title. by knocking out Indonesian Ruben Manakane in Japan in 2013.
He successfully defended the title against Fadhili Omari Majiha of Tanzania in 2014.
He has won eight straight fights since losing in a majority decision to Mexican David Sanchez for the WBC silver superflyweight title in Mexico in 2013.
