When Gilbert Burns was pulled from UFC on FOX 28, it was reported that he was going to be rescheduled for UFC on FOX 29 against Lando Vannata. The UFC even announced the fight themselves, but it turns out the fight isn’t going to happen next month.
Ariel Helwani reported on Friday that the fight was never finalized, and that Vannata won’t be ready to return by then.
Despite it being reported by multiple outlets, including http://UFC.com , Gilbert Burns vs. Lando Vannata is not happening 4/14 in Glendale, Ariz., multiple sources confirmed. It was discussed but never finalized. Vannata hoping to return in summer, I’m told.
Burns (13-2) was scheduled to face Olivier Aubin-Mercier in February, but concerns about his weight cut led to officials pulling him from the fight. The Brazilian reportedly was 186 pounds on fight week, leaving him 30 pounds to cut to make the lightweight limit. His most recent outing saw him KO Jason Saggo back in September.
Vannata (9-2-1) hasn’t fought since going to an entertaining split draw with Bobby Green atUFC 216. He made his UFC debut on short notice in 2016, nearly knocking out Tony Fergusonbefore losing by d’arce choke. His lone win inside the Octagon came by wheel kick KO vs.John Makdessi.
If they do fight, it won’t be at UFC on FOX 29 on April 14th, which features a strong lineup consisting of lightweight contenders Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier in the main event, while welterweights Carlos Condit and Matt Brown battle in the co-main event.
