Glenn Foot fires shots at Frank Warren before Commonwealth title challenge

Glenn Foot had some harsh words for boxing promoter Frank Warren as the Sunderland-born fighter enters the final stage of his preparations for this Saturday’s scrap for the vacant super lightweight Commonwealth title against Jason Easton.

The 30-year-old puncher lost a contentious decision to Middlesborough’s Josh Leather on the undercard of Liam Smith vs Liam Williams II last November, but believes the judges got it wrong.

“I was ripped off with the Josh Leather fight, I won that fight but that’s done now,” Foot said.

“I think Frank Warren has pumped so much money into Josh that he couldn’t let him get beat.

“Josh Leather knows in his own mind who won that fight. I’ve asked him for a rematch and I’ve had no response and I don’t think I’ll get one.”

Foot, a former English super lightweight title holder and Prizefighter winner, explained how the Leather family haven’t been forthcoming with claims made during the pre-fight press conference.

“I’m still waiting for his brother Kallam as well, he wanted to fight me next. I’ve heard nothing, so I don’t know what’s happening.

“Josh said in the prefight press conference that ‘after I beat you, my brother will fight you’ — I’m still waiting.”

Turning his attention to this Saturday’s fight with Scotland’s Jamie Easton at the The SSE Hydro in Glasgow for the vacant super lightweight Commonwealth strap, Foot said, “Jason Easton’s had 11 fights with 11 wins and he’s rated up there in Scotland, but he’s never boxed anyone like Glenn Foot and he’s in for a big shock.”

“I fight how Glenn Foot wants to fight and that’s on the front foot backing people up,” he continued.

But when asked about potential plans following Saturday’s fight the orthodox brawler refused to lose sight of his adversary.

“I just have to win this on Saturday night first,” said Foot.

“My head is back on the job now, my head wasn’t quite right before the Josh Leather fight – I’d lost a bit of interest in boxing, but I’m back now and everything’s looking good.”

And the avid Sunderland AFC fan cites cancelled fights as the reason he momentarily lost interest in boxing.

“I kept getting messed about, I had two British title fights lined up and they both pulled out the day before we were due to go in.”

“That made me switch off from boxing a little bit, but my heads back on the job now.”

When asked for his prediction for Saturday’s upcoming bout with Jason Easton, Foot explained, “Hopefully we get a first round knockout within ten seconds of the night — that’s my prediction.”

Foot also paid tribute to fellow North-East boxer Scott Wesgarth, who tragically died today.

“I never met him, it’s horrible what has happened. Boxing is a cruel sport. My thoughts go out to the family.”
