Oleksandr Usyk lived up to the hype with a one-sided decision win today over Krzysztof Głowacki.
Add a professional world title to Oleksandr Usyk’s list of career achievements, as he routed Krzysztof Głowacki today in Gdansk, Poland, leaving no question over 12 rounds as to the winner of the fight, and the better man in the ring.
Usyk (10-0, 9 KO) did have to go the distance for the first time as a pro, but won on scores of 117-111, 117-111, and 119-109 against a game Głowacki (26-1, 16 KO), who gave his all until the final bell.
Usyk, 29, damaged Głowacki’s eye early in the fight, largely due to a sharp jab, and simply had too much hand speed and high-level movement for the home fighter, who was spurred on by the partisan crowd, but wasn’t able to draw enough inspiration to make the bout truly competitive.
He did, however, acquit himself nicely, even in defeat. This was no easy night for Usyk, who earned the one-sided victory with a consistent attack. After five rounds, we had the fight 48-47 for Usyk, with Głowacki coming on to take the fourth and fifth. But Usyk adjusted nicely, re-neutralized his opponent, and won the rest of the fight on our card, coming out to 118-110 for our unofficial score.
The win propels Usyk to the top of the division, in the discussion for a No. 1 ranking in the minds of fans and media. It’s a competitive division with some really good fighters, but Usyk appears to have the skill set to give anyone major issues.
