Golovkin would have problems with Jermall Charlo says Derrick James

By Chris Williams: Derrick James, the trainer for unbeaten welterweight contender Errol Spence Jr, thinks middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) will have a lot of problems with the size, power and aggression of former IBF 154 pound champion Jermall Charlo (25-0, 19 KOs). Charlo just moved up to middleweight a couple of months ago, and he’s already rated No.2 by the World Boxing Council. Charlo and #1 WBC Jorge Sebastian Heiland could be facing each other next in a WBC title eliminator with the winner becoming the mandatory for Golovkin.

It might not be a problem for Golovkin with the news of his trainer Abel Sanchez saying that he plans on moving up in weight to 168. But if Golovkin stays at middleweight, he’s going to need to fight Charlo sooner or later if he becomes the WBC mandatory challenger.

The 26-year-old Jermall Charlo, 6’0”, is looking hard to beat right now by anyone in the 154 and 160 pound divisions, and that includes Golovkin and Saul Canelo Alvarez. Charlo’s recent wins over Julian Williams and Austin Trout showed you how good he is. He beat both of those guys despite looking dehydrated from having to drop a lot of water weight to get down to the 154 lb. limit.

“He’s too big for Triple G. He’s 6’2”,” said Derrick James to Dontae’s Boxing Nation about Jermall Charlo being taller than Golovkin. “Look, I’m 6’2” and he’s 6’2”. He’s big like a light heavyweight, and he can move and he can box. He’s got a little attitude. He’s got a little edge to him. He’s going to come with something. He’s got a good right hand. He’s on edge. Danny Jacobs is more mild mannered. If he catches you with a shot, he’ll catch you. Jermall is like, ‘I’ll get you. I’m going to get you.’ Why would he be scared of this guy? Look at who he had to spar with every day, Erislandy Lara,” said James.

Charlo could be the next star at middleweight division. If Golovkin stayed at 160, then the two of them could face each other and the boxing world would see how good the Kazakhstan fighter is. I don’t think Golovkin would beat Charlo. He’s a much different type of fighter than Daniel Jacobs. Charlo would come after Golovkin and be looking to take him out. If Golovkin fought the same way he did against Jacobs in a fight with Charlo, I think he’d lose the fight. He would have to fight Charlo to have a chance at winning, and I don’t think he could do that.

James is training his fighter Errol Spence to get ready for his title fight against IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook on May 27 at Bramall Lane in Sheffield, England. Spence is the favorite to win that fight.
