Heavyweight Malik Scott posted a video of himself and former IBF/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin (38-1-1, 34 KO) testing their strength at Big Bear, California, and it was clear that Triple G had the better power. Golovkin is looking return to the ring on June 1 or June 8 in his first fight of his new contract with DAZN. Two of the names that have been rumored to be in the running for Golovkin’s next fight are Brandon Adams and Kamil Szeremeta. Both fighters are highly ranked by the World Boxing Association, and will be good opponents for GGG to get the rust out to prepare him for a trilogy fight against Saul Canelo Alvarez in September.

Golovkin got the better of Scott in testing their grip, and then moments later, went at it in the ring for some MMA action.

GGG has been taking a break from boxing following his controversial 12 round majority decision loss to Saul Canelo Alvarez last September. Golovkin was viewed as the winner in that fight by a legion of boxing fans, as well as in his first fight with Canelo in September 2017, which coincidentally took place at the same venue at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The second fight was a close affair, much closer than the first contest, which appeared to be a decisive win for GGG. The second fight could have been scored a draw or a win for Golovkin, but the judges gave it to Canelo. They were impressed with how Canelo was walking Golovkin down through much of the fight. More accurately, Canelo was walking Golovkin to the center of the ring, and that’s where the two would stand and fight. Canelo was never able to back Golovkin up to the ropes, as he stood his ground at center ring each time, and dished out punishment.

Despite the controversy of the two Canelo-Golovkin fights, a lot of boxing fans are now writing GGG off, saying he’s over-the-hill, and not the fighter he used to be. In looking at Golovkin’s last fight against Canelo, he appeared to be the better fighter down the stretch, as the Mexican star gassed out in the championship rounds just like he did in the first fight. Golovkin appeared to be the younger fighter at the end, and the one with the better conditioning. It was Canelo’s venue at the T-Mobile, and Canelo’s crowd. Not surprisingly, Canelo won the fight by a questionable decision. It’s likely that the trilogy fight between Canelo and GGG, which is expected to take place later this year in September, will likely take place once again at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Without going into details, Golovkin says he learned a lot from his last fight against Canelo. What Triple G likely learned from the fight is not to let Canelo back him up at any point in the fight. What Golovkin possibly learned from his first fight with Canelo is not to stay on the outside and jab him for 12 rounds like Floyd Mayweather Jr. did in beating him by a lopsided 12 round decision in 2013. The judges weren’t impressed with Golovkin doing the same thing to Canelo as Mayweather did. As such, in order for Golovkin to beat Canelo, he’s going to need to take the fight to him, not back up, and make sure he wins the rounds decisive based on his power punching.

Former WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia feels that Golovkin isn’t overrated.

“He’s a good fighter. He’s not overrated,” Danny Garcia said to Fighthub about Golovkin. He can fight. GGG can fight.”
