PUERTO Princesa City – Hardpunching Jilbert “El Diamante” Gomera of Highland Boxing Gym landed solid body shots to stop undefeated Venezuelan Omrri Bolivar in Round 5to win the interim OPBF featherweight title last Nov. 10 at the Puerto Princesa City Coliseum here.
It was a slow start by Gomera, who kept on aiming for Bolivar’s head in the first two rounds. His trainer Joven Jorda told him to target on Bolivar’s body starting in the 3rd canto.
Bolivar started backpedalling in Round 3 after Gomera landed solid body shots.
Gomera twice downed Bolivar in the 5th round forcing international referee Danrex Tapdasan to stop the fight in 1:33.
Gomera received a golden belt awarded by OPBF President Baham Mitra.
“Nalipay dyud ko kaayo karon (I’m so very happy now),” said the 25-year old Gomera, who improved his record to 13 wins with seven knockouts against four losses.
The 27-year old Bolivar, who made his debut as a 10-rounder, only suffered his first setback after five straight wins.
The fight was one of the five championships featured in the boxing event of the 55th OPBF Convention.
