GRAND SLAM OF BOXING IN MEXICO CITY’S ZOCALO

No fooling!  The Grand Slam of Capitol boxing in front of 50,000 fans in Mexico City’s giant Zocalo on April 1st when Mexican legend Mariana “Barby” Juarez, challenges formidable World Boxing Council Champion Catherine Phiri.

A lot of pride at stake as Phiri (12-1, 6 KO’s) won the title from Mexico’s Yazmín Rivas on a technical decision.  Now the lady from Lusaka, Zambia is coming into the Lioness Den to defend her title and her pride.

Mariana, who described herself as super happy in the face of this exacting challenge is no stranger to the Big Time. As WBC flyweight champion, she successfully defended her crown seven times. She’s now the WBC international super flyweight champion.
Mariana has a magnificent 44-9-4 record, including 17KO’s.

Mariana said: “Catherine has done extraordinary things in the ring, and she’s a very strong rival. But I’m working really hard in the gym, and so proud to be fighting in front of my own people.”

This boxing extravaganza, right in the heart of Mexico City, which is free to the public will feature a grand slam of ten fights.

WBC female heavyweight champion Alejandra “Tigre” Jimenez returns to the ring also. Undefeated Alejandra, became the first Mexican woman to win the WBC heavyweight crown defeating Martha Salazar last year in Cancun.

Ever popular and flamboyant Nery “Pantera” Saguilán fights Jesus Vidales Cotto for the national super lightweight title. Undefeated thunderbolt Eduardo “Rocky” Hernandez will have action too.

A special presentation of Olympian Juan Pablo Pivi.  And a special salute to Don King, the most extraordinary Promoter of all time, and favorite son of Texcoco.

The main promoter is this Grand Slam is Promociones Del Pueblo. But none of this would be possible without the help, foresight and cooperation of Delegate  of Cuauhtemoc Ricardo Monreal and his Team.

He spoke of the pride this district has for its boxers and the keenness of young people to learn boxing. On the podium alongside him: Juan Manuel Marquez, Edgar Sosa, Saúl “Baby” Juarez, Mariana Juarez, Edgar “Power” Jimenez, Alejandra “Tigre” Jimenez, Nery Saguilán and Judith Rodríguez.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, who was presented with a special plaque honoring him and his Father Don Jose, called this a fiesta of national plus international boxing fiesta and history in the making.

The setting of this Press Conference was so apt. It was the Jose Sulaiman Gym which was re-inaugurated. The words on that plaque read: “In memory of a great initiator of boxing in our country and the World.
