Alexander Gustafsson is adamant about fighting Jon Jones in his return to the UFC.
Last week, after it was announced that Jon Jones could return to the Octagon as early as October 28 due to him receiving a light, 15-month suspension by USADA, Alexander Gustafsson took to social media to call out the former light heavyweight champ for a rematch.
Jones, who beat Gustafsson in a nail-biting, Fight of the Year contest back in 2013, didn’t respond to the Swede – so ‘The Mauler’ sent out another Instagram post directed at his ex-rival.
“Who would u fight if not me champ @jonnybones ?! That’s the only fight that makes sense right now! Why wait let’s do it.. let me beat u one more time,” Gustafsson posted on Saturday, just two days after he originally called out Jones on Instagram.
Jones, who tested positive for steroids last year, seems more interested in a championship rematch with current two-division champ Daniel Cormier, who he originally beat via knockout at UFC 214. That win was overturned to a No Contest (NC) after ‘Bones’ flagged for PEDs and ‘DC’ was reinstated as the official light heavyweight champ. Cormier then went on to KO Stipe Miocic to win the heavyweight title at UFC 226, becoming the first simultaneous light heavyweight and heavyweight titleholder in the promotion’s history.
Gustafsson, who also lost a close split decision to Cormier back in 2015, is on a two-fight win streak but hasn’t fought since May of last year. The UFC is much more likely to book a trilogy fight between Jones and Cormier than have Gustafsson welcome back Jones to the Octagon.
