“GUTY” ESPADAS BECOMES WBC HONORARY WORLD CHAMPION

World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman Saldivar, led  a memorable recognition ceremony in Merida, Yucatan, to honor the former world champion, Gustavo Espadas “Guty” Cruz, who was named WBC honorary world champion.

The Homage was at the Zamna Poliforum , attended by the family of  Espadas Cruz, sports ‘characters, and many great fighters from the past and present.

“Forty years are easy to say…thanks all for coming” ´Guty´ confided with great joy.

During the celebrations a documentary “Huracán de Yucatán”,  was shown, where we all remembered his great fight with Alfonso Lopez,  where Guty became world champion on October 2nd, 1976 at the Sport Arena in Los Angeles, California.

Guty Espadas Jr thanked everyone, praising his father, as he remembered all the struggles he weathered  for him and his brothers.

Mauricio Sulaiman, also commented that back then, the fights were to 15 rounds, with the Yucatan producing 5 world champions.

“ I remember all of them. Yucatan was very important for all the boxing world scene. That is why I have come to this special homage on  behalf all THE boxing community and World Boxing Council in order to present this world champion belt to Espadas.  Even though he was not a WBC champion, he was a world champion and he really deserves this recognition!”
