Oleksandr Gvozdyk won the interim WBC light heavyweight title tonight in New York, dominating a 12-round bout with a tough Mehdi Amar, winning on scores of 116-112, 117-111, and 118-110.

BLH had the fight 118-110 and 119-109 for Gvozdyk.

Gvozdyk (15-0, 12 KO) showed off his acclaimed skills and his vaunted power, but Amar (34-6-2, 16 KO) didn’t wilt under the pressure, and stayed upright for all 36 minutes of action, and he deserves credit for that, as he got hit with some good shots. Amar, 35, had never been down in his pro career, and still has not, which is quite the achievement and a big testament to his chin.

Gvozdyk is now in position to challenge Adonis Stevenson for the full WBC title. Stevenson returns to action on May 19 against Badou Jack.

According to CompuBox, Gvozdyk landed 256 of 960 (27%) total punches, including 176 of 492 (36%) of his power shots, a solid connect rate. Amar landed 135 of 536 (25%) of his total shots, and 92 of 337 (27%) on power.
