2016 Olympic heavyweight bronze medalist Filip “El Animal” Hrgovic (8-0, 6 KOs) destroyed Gregory Corbin (15-2, 9 KOs) by a first round knockout on on Saturday night on DAZN at the MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

The 6’5″ Hrgovic nailed the 38-year-old Corbin by hitting him with a right hand to the side of the head that sent him down. Corbin had his back slightly turned and he was out of position when the 26-year-old Hrgovic hit him with a short right hand that landed to the temple area. Corbin hit the deck hard. He got back up on weak legs, but the referee Brent Bovell decided that he was too hurt to allow the fight to continue. The official time of the stoppage was at 1:00 of round one.

“I don’t think the fans saw the real Hrgovic,” said Hrgovic after the fight. “we’re ready to fight the best opponents. Look, I told him I’ll fight anybody, anywhere, anytime in the heavyweight division.”

Hrgovic was asked if he’d be willing to fight Joe Joyce on July 13, and his response was that he would be willing to fight anyone. However, Hrgovic chose not to mention Joyce’s name for some reason.

Michael Hunter vs. Fabio Maldonado – Results

Heavyweight contender Michael Hunter (17-0, 12 KOs) stopped Fabio Maldonado (26-3, 25 KOs) in the second round of a scheduled 10 round fight. The badly hurt Maldonado turned his back on Hunter. The fight was halted at 1:45 of round 2.

This was a huge statement victory for Hunter in knocking out a fighter that had never been stopped before during his career in Maldonado. The Brazilian came into the fight having lost his last two fights to Oleksandr Teslenko and Oscar Rivas, but neither of them had been able to knock him down or stop him. Hunter did a job on Maldonado in hurting him with a right hand, and then flurries on him with nonstop punches until the referee stopped the contest.

The referee Harvey Dock then halted the fight at that moment. Maldonado was down earlier in the round, and he’d also been given a standing eight count after getting hurt by a right hand to the head followed by a left hook to the head.

Hunter connected on 27 of 50 shots for a connect percentage of 54. For his part, Maldonado threw two punches and landed nothing.

“I used my experience. I’ve been fighting around the world,” Hunter said in talking about his stoppage win over Maldonado. “I would love to fight anybody. I would like to fight a mandatory. Anthony Joshua, he’s the cash cow. It’s an easy fight to make. I want Dillian Whyte. I want a mandatory. I want Dillian Whyte,” Hunter said.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Dillian Whyte responds to be calling out by Hunter. Whyte is usually the one that calls out his opponents. In this case, Hunter is doing the hunting and looking to go after Whyte in an eliminator.

“I think we could beat Fury, Joshua and Whyte,” said former heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman.

Daniyar Yelussinov vs. Luis Normabuena – Results

Undefeated 2016 Olympic gold medalist Daniyar Yelussinov (7-0, 3 KOs) had a harder time than expected in beating replacement opponent Luis Normabuena (3-2-1) by a six round unanimous decision. The scores were 59-55, 60-54 and 60-54. Boxing News 24 had the 28-year-old winning six rounds to zero.

The 2016 Olympic gold medalist Yelussinov got the victory, but he was taking shots from Normabuena, and his power did not look impressive at all for a fighter with the kind of amateur credentials that he has. Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn is going to need to start thinking about moving on once Yelussinov’s contract with his promotional team runs out, because he doesn’t look like he’s got the right style for the pro game for him to be successful.

In other boxing results on the card:
