In a packed and emotional ceremony at the “Edel Ojefa” Gym located in the National Polytechnic Institute, former four division World Boxing Council Champion Erik Morales, forever loyal to the Green and Gold, was presented with a special plaque, commemorating his fabulous twenty year boxing career.
Erik will be inducted into the International Hall of Fame of Canastota, on June 10. He won world titles in four divisions and retired in 2012 with a record of 52-9, and 36 knockouts.
Among his most memorable matches is his triumph over Manny Pacquiao in 2005, as well as his famous and thrilling trilogy with his compatriot Marco Antonio Barrera.
World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman, recalled the first steps of the Tijuana fighter, as a lean young man in shorts that has always showed his red badge of courage, also constantly sporting the WBC colors.
Erik who was presented his award by WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman and WBC Communications Director plus WBC Historian Don Victor Cota, said:
“I am Thrilled and so proud of this recognition, I have always considered the WBC to be my home and today, with these signs of affection, I reaffirm my loyalty.
” It is inevitable for me to remember the man who trusted and believed in me, my dear Don José, whom I will always carry in my heart. Thanks to him, boxing took a new direction and today we all collect the fruits of his dedication and. love for our sport.
” To my great friend, my President Mauricio Sulaiman, I can only say: thank you, for your support, your guidance and especially for your friendship ”
Asked about what it takes to be a multi champion, Erik smiled, replying: “It’s to do with dedication and sacrifices. But also wanting to be more, wanting more and more and more, to be better than your opponent. And putting your heart and soul on the line.”
Once bitter rivals, with a lot of hot blood and some bad blood between, Erik and Marco Antonio Barrera, who fought three absolutely fierce and fantastic fights, are now very good friends, and fellow television commentators, working side by side, rather than face to face.
With the broadest grin Erik says: “How we worked for those fights and during them! A rivalry spanning quite some time. There’s nothing left to dispute and fight for. So we are both enjoying life, and that’s just great!”
