By Danny Ech: The time has finally arrived where Keith “One Time” Thurman is back in the St. Pete Boxing gym in Florida training. If you try to access Thurman’s verified Instagram Page you won’t find any current updated pictures. The current pictures that have been released are on Chris Getty’s Instagram page. Now for those fans that don’t know Keith Thurman’s original trainer was none other than Legendary trainer Ben Getty and Chris Getty is his son.
Thurman is currently being trained by another great trainer in Dan Birmingham who is best known for training former World Light Middleweight Champion Winky Wright, Jeff Lacy, and Chad Dawson just to name a few. The pictures that have been released show Thurman in pretty good shape after such a long layoff, so it shouldn’t take too long for Keith to be back in fighting shape. The welterweight division has suffered a void with the absence of One Time and it is great to see him currently training again and we hope a fight will be announced in the coming months.
We did receive some great news today that two former foes of Thurman will be fighting each other finally. The news that broke today was Danny “Swift” Garcia vs Shawn “Showtime” Porter on Sep 8th which will most likely be a fight of the year candidate. I must give respect where respect is due and both Danny and Shawn put on great fights against One Time Thurman but neither fighter was successful in defeating him.
In my opinion both victories where great for two reasons, one reason is because Keith had already been struggling for years to get fights and he got these two fight and came out with a larger profile because of his victories, and in the end he had two belts one defended against Shawn (WBA) and one gained against Danny (WBC ). The second reason is because both victories for One Time where against two fighters that were young and in the prime of their careers plus Danny Garcia was also undefeated at the time.
I hope with Keith Thurman back in the gym and Garcia vs Porter that we can look forward to a great ending for the welterweight division in 2018 with the Garcia vs Porter match and a great 2019 in the near future with these guys and the new comers to the division and possibly an undisputed welterweight champion. Welcome Back Keith “One Time” Thurman we did miss Mr. KO’s for life.
