Jaime Munguia Stops Johnson, Wants the Big Names in the Middleweight Division
By Carlos Costa
Mexican middleweight slugger Jaime Munguia (36-0, 29 KO’s) of Tijuana, Baja California, scored a 6th round stoppage over tough Bahamas veteran Tureano Johnson tonight at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio California, retaining his regional WBO Intercontinental belt, as well as his WBO # 1 middleweight ranking.
Taking control of actions, a crushing big right uppercut thrown by the Mexican in round 5 opened a severe cut on Johnson’s upper lip, prompting veteran referee Raul Caiz Sr., to stop the battle.
Taking punishment, Johnson had already another cut on his left eye.
The victory was a stepping-stone win for the unbeaten 6 foot former super welterweight champion Munguía, who is trained in his native Tijuana by legendary Mexican warrior Erik “El Terrible” Morales.
The hard-swinging 24-year-old Jaime Munguía would like to see action in 2021 against any of the toughest names in the middleweight division such as Kazakhstan’s “GGG” Gennady Golovkin, Demetrius Andrade, Jermell Charlo, Ryota Murata, or even against fellow Mexican Canelo Álvarez.
