Jamal James decisions Antonio DeMarco – live fight results

By Jim Dower: #5 WBA welterweight contender Jamal James (26-1, 12 KOs) defeated former WBC lightweight world champion Antonio DeMarco (33-8-1, 24 KOs) by 10 round unanimous decision on Saturday night on FOX Sports 1 at the Armory, Minneapolis, in Minnesota, USA. The judges’ scores were 98-92, 98-92 and 98-92. It was a good win for James, but he was facing a smaller guy in DeMarco.

The win for James, 30, was his sixth since losing to Yordenis Ugas by a 10 round unanimous decision in 2016.

Gerald Washington stops Robert Helenius

Former heavyweight world title challenger Gerald Washington (20-3-1, 13 KOs) defeated Robert Helenius (28-8, 17 KOs) by an eighth round knockout. Fighting on the undercard of Jamal James vs. Antonio DeMarco, the 6’6″ Washington scored a big upset in nailing the 6’6 1/2″ Helenius with a big right hand that that put him down on the canvas. The 35-year-old Helenius attempted to get back up, but the fight was halted by referee Gary Miezwa. The official time of the stoppage was at 2:32 of round eight. At the time the fight was halted, Helenius was ahead on the scorecards, and appeared to be on his way to winning. Boxing News 24 had Helenius up five rounds to two.

This was a big win for the 37-year-old Washington, who has lost to WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and Jarrell ‘Big Baby’ Miller in the last two years. It’s not like Washington hasn’t had opportunities to make it big during his career. He’s not been able to take advantage of the opportunities.

This is another disappointing upset loss for Helenius. He had a three-fight winning streak going after his 12 round unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Dillian Whyte in October 2017. Helenius gave Whyte some problems before losing that fight. Three years ago, Helenius was shockingly stopped in the sixth round by Johann Duhaupas in 2016. Going into that match, Helenius was on his way to getting a title shot, but Duhaupas ruined his plans.

Charles Martin stops Daniel Martz – Results

Journeyman Daniel Martz (18-6-1, 15 KOs) was no match for former International Boxing Federation heavyweight champion Charles Martin (27-2-1, 24 KOs) in losing by a fourth round knockout. Martin, 33, knocked Martz down twice in the fourth round. The fight was halted by referee Celestino Ruiz at 2:03 of round four.

Martin is trying to work his way back to a world title shot following his close 10 round unanimous decision to Adam Kownacki last September. Before that loss, Martin had won two fights in a row after having lost his IBF title to Anthony Joshua by a second round knockout in 2016. It looked like the 6’5″ southpaw Martin was on his way to rebuild his career until he was beaten by Kownwacki.

Welterweight Bryant Perrella (17-2, 14 KOs) stopped Domonique Dolton (22-3-1, 13 KOs) in the third round. Parrella was teeing off on Dolton at the time the referee halted the fight. The time of the stoppage was at 1:24.

Undefeated light welterweight Gary Antuanne Russell (10-0, 10 KOs) stopped journeyman Larry Ventus (9-14-1, 4 KOs) in the third round. Russell dropped Ventus three times before the refere finally halted it.
