Jeison ‘Banana’ Rosario could be facing Jermell Charlo in a unification fight this summer due to former IBF/WBA junior middleweight champion Julian ‘J-Rock’ Williams choosing not to force an immediate rematch with him, according to @StevESPNKim.
Williams, 29, is willing to do a rematch with Rosario later in 2020, but he’s now he’s recovering from surgery to repair the cut that he sustained over his left eye against Jeison.
During the fight, Rosario came out and showed that intimidation outside of the ring is a waste of time. He was punishing Williams from the outset, and it was clear that he would need to change things up for him to keep from getting knocked out by Rosario. Williams never did make any adjustments, and he paid the price in losing his two world titles.
J-Rock Needs To Heal Up Before Facing Rosario Again
With Rosario planning on fighting in the summer, it would be a risk for Williams to rush back into the ring with him. Even with two healthy eyes, Williams is going to have a lot of problems with the youth and power of the 24-year-old Rosario. It’s not a good idea for Williams to face Rosario again until his cut is healed.
Right now, the Rosario vs. Jermell fight is still at the rumor stage, but it would be outstanding if that fight happens, given that J-Rock’ isn’t electing to take the immediate rematch with ‘Banana.’
Jeison has IBF mandatory due
Rosario could face WBC junior middleweight champion Charlo (33-1, 17 KOs) or his IBF mandatory Bakhram Murtazaliev (17-0, 13 KOs), which is due. Boxing fans would obviously like to see Rosario fight Charlo more so than Murtazaliev, who hasn’t faced anyone good yet since turning professional in 2014.
Rosario (20-1-1, 14 KOs) defeated IBF/WBA 154-lb champion ‘J-Rock’ Williams (27-2-1, 16 KOs) by a surprising 5th round knockout on January 18 in Liacouras Center, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
“Multiple sources have told me that Julian Williams has not enforced his immediate rematch with WBA/IBF 154 pound champion, Jeison Rosario. ‘Banana’s will return in the summer per his promoter Sampson Lewkowicz. He has an IBF mandatory due, also rumors of him facing Jermell Charlo,” said @StevESPNKim. on Twitter.News:David Benavidez to face Roamer Alexis Angulo on April 18 in Phoenix
Before J-Rock lost to Rosario, there was talk of him facing Jermell Charlo in a unification fight. Also, a rematch with Jarrett Hurd was a possibility, but those potential fights for J-Rock went up in smoke with his loss to Rosario. In the build-up to the fight, Williams had played tough guy during his face-offs with interaction with Rosario during the news conferences.
Jermell Will Need To Box Rosario
Charlo, 29, is coming off of an 11th round knockout over WBC 154-lb champion Tony Harrison in their rematch on December 21 in Ontario, California. Jermell knocked Harrison down three times in the fight. Harrison beat Jermell by an upset 12 round unanimous decision in their first fight in December 2018.
In their rematch, Harrison deviated from using his boxing and chose to slug more with Jermell. That didn’t work out well for Harrison, as the more powerful Charlo took advantage of Harrison’s aggressiveness by hurting him with his big shots.News:Jay Harris thinks he deserved draw against Julio Cesar Martinez
We’ll have to see how well Charlo does against Rosario if that fight happens. It might be a good idea for Jermell to try and box Rosario instead of brawling because this guy hits too hard. Rosario. 24, is five years younger and he’s a better puncher.
“More on Rosario-Williams, Sampson Lewkowicz says that they are more than willing to do that rematch later on in 2020. Also, I’m told that J-Roc had surgery recently for that cut he suffered over that left eye… #boxing,” said @StevESPNKim.
