Charlo, 28, sees Andrade calling out Spence as an attempt to increase his name recognition in the boxing world by calling out a popular fighter. In other words, Jermall thinks Andrade is using a tactic called, ‘name dropping,’ which is a tried and true method to put oneself in a higher status position without actually working to get to that spot. By clout chasing aka name dropping, a person increases his status by naming important people and speaking as if their in the same class.

“There’s a new word people are saying these days called , ‘clout chasing,’ and boxers are starting to do it now too,” Jermall said to fighthype. “To get their fights bigger, they clout chase. I want to tell you not to get too confused by clout chasers and somebody that is really about their business. So don’t get it misconstrued,” Charlo said.

It’s unclear whether Andrade (26-0, 16 KOs) actually did call out Spence, as it’s just a rumor that he called him out. There’s a lot more money for Andrade, 30, in facing WBC middleweight champion Saul Canelo Alvarez in a unification fight or a match against Gennady Golovkin. Fighting Spence (24-0, 21 KOs), who holds the International Boxing Federation welterweight title, wouldn’t likely be a big enough fight to increase his status. Andrade would receive more criticism than praise if he fought a welterweight like Spence. It would be similar to how former super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko defended his WBO 130 lb title against super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux last December. Lomachenko chose not to give Rigondeaux a handicap by fighting him at a catchweight, so the two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist was forced to move up two weight divisions to fight him at 130. Andrade wouldn’t get any credit for beating Spence at middleweight.

“There’s some people that are clout chasing in boxing,” Charlo said. “I’m not going to call no names, but it’s clout chasing, bro. If you know boxing, it sounds stupid, you know. He’s out to make himself bigger and better. He’s trying to get out there. This is the best he’s ever done with boxing with DAZN. So let him stay over there and do what he’s got to do. When I go over there? It’s gumbo when I stir up the pot. When I go over there, it’s going to be meat,” Charlo said.

Andrade won the vacant WBO middleweight title this month in beating little known Walter Kautondokwa by a 12 round unanimous decision on October 20 on a DAZN card at TD Garden in Boston, Mass. Andrade re-injured his left shoulder in the fight, and he spent most of the second half of the fight on the move, boxing and trying to minimize his output. Andrade’s promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing USA expects him back in January to defend his WBO title against an opponent still to be determined. Hearn wants to match Andrade against former WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders, but that fight might be too soon.
