Jermell Charlo acquitted in domestic violence case

Jermell Charlo, who was arrested last May for allegedly choking his former girlfriend, finally had his day in court and has been acquitted on two charges of domestic violence, per an ESPN report.

After hearing testimony from the woman during his trial, which took place this week, 12 jurors found Charlo not guilty of the crimes following a three-hour deliberation. Charlo was facing three-to-ten years if he had been convicted.

“I can’t express how happy and relieved I am to be acquitted of these very serious charges,” Charlo said in a statement given to ESPN. “I was accused of choking and striking a woman, which is a horrible crime that I didn’t commit. I am grateful to my legal defense team, especially my lawyer Mike Howard, for the wonderful job they did for me.”

Charlo, 28, continued by saying that the case was a dark cloud hanging over his head for the past year which served as a serious distraction in his boxing career as well as other business opportunities he had on the table. During that time Charlo fought twice, beating Austin Trout in June and then losing his WBC world title in a questionable loss to Tony Harrison in December.

The former world champion also said he had been offered a plea deal but couldn’t accept it in good conscience because he knew he wasn’t guilty of the crimes. The woman still has a pending civil suit against Charlo.
