In anticipation of June 9th WBC junior middleweight title defense, champion Jermell Charlo (30-0, 15 KOs) holds a kick off press conference with challenger Austin Trout (31-4, 17 KOs), formally announcing the fight. You can watch the presser and face off with the fighters exchaning some words above, courtesy of our friends at Fight Hub TV.
Trout is coming off a bounce-back decision win over Juan De Angel in February which followed to consecutive losses to Jarrett Hurd and Jermell’s twin brother Jermall in May 2016. Trout’s chances at regaining a world title are likely running thin at this point so he’s going to need to get over the hump in this one.
“Much respect to Charlo, he didn’t have to take this fight, but he did, so now we get to go in and get it on. I’m just here really to stop the Charlo show. Like, the last time I fought his brother, you know what I mean, I remember Showtime was already saying history’s gonna be made and everything and I ain’t even step in the ring yet. So here I am again with another opportunity to stop the Charlo show and start the Trout show.”
Meanwhile the undefeated Charlo is most recently coming off of a spectacular first round knockout of highly touted prospect Erickson Lubin last October in Brooklyn. Some people chalked up the KO blow to being somewhat fluky, but it sure made a statement and was one for the highlight reel.
“Austin Trout is a great fighter, you know, this is a fight where I gotta get in there and really put my mind to it and do what I have to do. Just like the last fights, we understand that those individuals were intending to win and that’s their job. Their job is to come in to defeat me and try to beat me…
“This Charlo show gonna keep going, baby! I ain’t stopping…They know the wave, they know what it is right now. I’m not worried about the fight he had with my brother ‘cause the fight he had with my brother was back in 2016. And so every year we’re growing and we’re changing. You can go back and try to study as much as you can but I’m not gonna be that fighter that ya’ll thought I was the last fight…
“You can come, try to fight, the urgency and the desperation to try to rebuild your career but you know really what time it is…”
Charlo and Trout will square off next month at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in a PBC on Showtime telecast.
