Jezreel Corrales to defend title against Alberto Machado, Oct. 21

WBA junior lightweight titleholder Jezreel Corrales (22-1, 8 KOs) is scheduled to defend his strap for the third time when he takes on Alberto Machado (18-0, 15 KOs) on October 21st at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York. The fight will headline an HBO Boxing After Dark card that begins at 10pm, ESPN reports.

“I am very excited to fight for a second time on HBO, but this time in the headlining bout of a great event,” Corrales said. “I know that Alberto Machado is a strong fighter, but I too am strong and intelligent. I know that my style of fighting will give him a lot of problems. I’m confident that I will defend my title for the third time successfully.”

Corrales made his HBO debut this past July when he took on Robinson Castellanos in a hard fought battle. Corrales was dropped twice in fourth round but rallied back to drop Castallenos in the seventh — unfortunately the fight would be cut short in the 10th after an accidental head clash opened a big cut on Castellanos. That forced the fight to go to the scorecards where Corrales was up and took a technical decision win.

Meanwhile, Machado earned this shot at Corrales by beating Carlos Morales this past August on a Golden Boy on ESPN card. The 27-year-old says he’s ready for the challenge and hopes to bring belt back to Puerto Rico.

“This fight is for my son, my family and for Puerto Rico. I know that a victory would bring happiness to Puerto Rico after the destruction caused by Hurricane Maria. HBO is the television channel that each boxer wants to be on in order to keep moving on to better things, as was done by great Puerto Rican boxers such as Miguel Cotto, Felix ‘Tito’ Trinidad and Hector ‘Macho’ Camacho.”

Former junior middleweight world titlist Demetrius Andrade is also expected to co-feature on this card against an opponent to be determined as part of his new three fight contract with HBO. But for this outing Andrade will be moving up to middleweight where HBO hopes to line him up against some of its other notable fighters down the line. That list specifically includes the likes of Gennady Golovkin, Canelo Alvarez, David Lemiuex, and Daniel Jacobs.
