Jinh Yu Frey and Minna Grusander’s first encounter was a hard fought five-round affair, and they’re getting 25 more minutes to settle the score.
Officials announced Wednesday that Frey will defend her atomweight title in the main event of Invicta FC 33 on Dec. 15 in Kansas City, Mo. This will be a rematch of their Invicta FC 30 bout in July that Frey won by unanimous decision to claim a vacant championship.
The result was controversial, though not just because the action was so closely contested. Following the bout, Frey and her team accused Grusander of intentionally entering the cage with a foul body odor to distract Frey. Speaking to MMA Fighting, Grusander scoffed at the accusations, calling them “disgraceful”.
Frey has been with Invicta since 2014, compiling a 5-2 record in the promotion with notable wins over Grusander, Ashley Cummins, and former champion Herica Tiburcio. She is 7-3 overall as a professional.
The Frey bout was Grusander’s second appearance for Invicta. After going 5-1 to start her pro career, the Finnish fighter made a successful Invicta debut with a second-round TKO of Fernanda Priscila in March.
Several other bouts were made official for the Dec. 15 show, which will air on UFC Fight Pass, including bookings for recently signed UFC vets Danielle Taylor and Jamie Moyle.
