UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk doesn’t think Karolina Kowalkiewicz, whom she defeated for the second time at UFC 205, deserves another crack at the belt right away.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk is already being asked if she’d be willing to fight Karolina Kowalkiewicz a third time. Her answer? No.
Jedrzejczyk and Kowalkiewicz squared off for the second time — the first time professionally — at UFC 205 this past weekend, and once again, Joanna walked away with the victory, retaining her women’s strawweight title.
Jedrzejczyk dominated the first three rounds, but Kowalkiewicz nearly pulled off the upset in the fourth round, stunning the 115-pound champion with several shots. But it wasn’t enough as Jedrzejczyk survived and ended up getting the judges’ nod.
Kowalkiewicz immediately expressed interest in a trilogy bout with her Polish rival, but Jedrzejczyk doesn’t think she deserves another title shot right away.
“She lost the fight,” Jedrzejczyk told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour Monday (transcription via MMAFighting.com). “It was like 10-8 every round. Maybe the fourth round she was dangerous for like 10 seconds. In Woodley and Thompson, Thompson deserved the rematch; the fight was so close. She can’t talk about the rematch. I heard she was running to Dana (White) right after the fight and asking for the rematch, but come on, come on.”
Jedrzejczyk likely suffered the most damage against Kowalkiewicz she ever has in her UFC tenure, but is adamant that the New York City bout wasn’t the toughest of her career. The 29-year-old implied that previous fights with Claudia Gadelha and Valerie Letourneau took more of a toll on her than her most recent outing.
“Karolina was tough. I didn’t disrespect her before the fight,” she said. “I was so dominant in this fight, I felt so great, I felt like I could do more, but I did just enough. OK, she dropped me in the fourth round, but that’s all. So she was just dangerous for like 15 seconds, that’s all. I felt great, and I’m good. She was not the toughest, but I expected very tough fight from her. She was the challenger, and I know that Polish chicks are tough.”
