Joe Joyce calls out Dillian Whyte

Following heavyweight Dillian Whyte (23-1, 17 KOs) saying he would “destroy” him, Joe Joyce (4-0, 4 KOs) has called him out asking him to prove it inside the ring. 2016 Olympic silver medalist Joyce wants Whyte to prove that he’s better than him.

Whyte vs. Joyce would sell a lot of tickets at the O2 Arena in London. This would be a true 50-50 fight. Joyce has a lot more quality experience fighting in the amateur ranks against guys like Tony Joka, Oleksandr Usyk, Ivan Dychko and Sergei Kuzmin. Whyte’s pro experience is mainly limited to Anthony Joshua and Dereck Chisora.

Whyte, 29, probably won’t take Joyce up on his offer, because he’s become very careful with his career ever since his close call against Dereck Chisora in 2016. That fight was a HUGE wakeup call for Whyte, letting him know that his career and his chance for a big payday against Anthony Joshua could be wiped out within a wink of an eye if he loses again. Joyce is not the medicine the doctor ordered for Whyte. He’s the poison.

Joe Joyce said this on Thursday in calling out Whyte:

”Dillian Whyte, in your own words, “LET’S GO BABY, LET’S GO!!!” Make the call ☎️ #THEJUGGERNAUT.”

It would show a lot of courage on Whyte’s part if he were to take on Joyce, because this would involve him facing his best opponent since his fight with Anthony Joshua in 2015. Joyce ran out of gas in 2 rounds in that fight and ended up getting knocked out in round 7.

Whyte could be facing Kubrat Pulev next in an IBF heavyweight title eliminator. Whyte rejected a WBC ordered eliminator against Luis ‘King Kong’ Ortiz, because he feels that his recent 6th round knockout win over Lucas Browne was an enough for to warrant the mandatory spot for Wilder. The WBC wanted Whyte to take a real test that involved some real risk, but he wasn’t up for facing the highly skilled Cuban Ortiz.

“He’s 32, he’s turned pro late,” Whyte said to skysports.com about Joyce. “He’s making noise to ge some big fights. Why did he stay amateur so long? Because he wasn’t good enough. He waited for the good amateurs, like Anthony Joshua, to go through. He just wasn’t good when,” Whyte said. “Joyce is very deluded.”

Contrary to Whyte saying that Joyce wasn’t good enough to make it as an amateur, he had to be a good fighter for him to make it onto the Olympic team and win a silver medal in the 2016 Olympics. Whyte lost to Tony Yoka in the finals, and that’s a fight that could have gone the other way for sure. In the World Series of Boxing, Joyce gave Oleksander Usyk a lot of problems in losing a decision to him. Usyk’s face was badly marked up from the heavy shots from Joyce, and that was with the Ukrainian doing his best to fight defensively.

Whyte hasn’t had a real test since his loss to Anthony Joshua in 2015. Whyte has had three years of fighting the likes of Malcolm Tann, David Allen and Ivica Bacurin. He’s had 3 fringe contenders in 39-year-old Lucas ‘Big Daddy’ Browne, 34-year-old Dereck Chisora and 34-year-old Robert Helenius. Whyte was lucky to get a decision against Chisora, because most boxing fans think he lost that fight. That’s a fight that is begging for a rematch, but Whyte isn’t interested in fighting Chisora a second time until he gets some good wins under his belt.

Joyce beat Commonwealth heavyweight champion Lenroy Thomas by a 2nd round knockout last Saturday night at the O2 Arena in London. After entering the ring wearing a sombrero, Joyce dropped three times in the fight in halting him in round 2. Joyce knocked Thomas down with a body shot in round 1 and continued to unload on him with no letup in round 2. Joyce overheard Thomas’ trainer telling him in between rounds that he didn’t think he would get tired from throwing nonstop punches, and sure enough, he was right. Joyce continued to hammer Thomas in round 2 until the fight was halted.

Joyce also has been turned down by heavyweight contender Jarrell ‘Big Baby’ Miller, who let him know on Thursday that he’s not interested in fighting him.

”I can see David Haye is teaching you well trying to get big fights without actually earning them. LOL,” Miller said on his Twitter to Joyce. ”You looking like brown skin lurch from the Addams Family. Get 10 Fights first. You’re not no Vasyl Lomachenko. Lmfao. Another English muffin. lmfao,” Miller said.

The 29-year-old Miller just recently started fighting lower level contenders in facing Gerald Washington, Mariusz Wach and Johann Duhaupas. Miller won all three of those fights, but he did not look very good in any of those fights. Washington almost knocked Miller out in the 5th. Miller looked weak against Wach, and he was hit a lot in his fight with former heavyweight world title challenger Duhaupas.

Here’s Joyce’s response to Miller turning him down for a fight:

”Sounds like your making excuses Big man! Anthony Joshua and BronzeBomber are going to fight, so I can be your warm up for the summer!😉 Let’s go to war for the fans 🇬🇧 vs. U.S. #THEJUGGERNAUT.”
Milller is in the same boat as Whyte with him waiting for a world title shot against Anthony Joshua.

Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn sees Miller as being useful for him to create interest in AJ in the U.S by bringing him over to New York to stage a fight between them. Miller is one of the better heavyweights from the United States now. Miller might not be the best in terms of talent, but he’s one of the best talkers in the country at heavyweight. Unfortunately, Joyce is probably not going to be able to get a chance at fighting Miller or Whyte until after they fight Joshua. If they fight him, they might be a little more receptive to fighting Joyce.

Joyce’s promoter David Haye is going to need to come up with some big money to get the top guys to face him, because right now it’s not looking good. The following heavyweights have now turned down a fight against Joyce:

• Dereck Chisora

• Dillian Whyte

• Jarrell Miller

Joyce should try calling out Luis Ortiz, Adam Kownacki, Carlos Takam, Joseph Parker, Dominic Breazeale, Agilt Kabayel, Christian Hammer, Bryant Jennings, Bermane Stiverne and Charles Martin. Perhaps one of them will say yes to a fight against Joyce if they’re offered a big enough payday.
