JORDAN GILL has become the latest member of Dave Coldwell’s growing stable, where he will train under the watchful eye of the Rotherham based trainer, who will also manage “The Thrill” as he sets his sights on title fights in 2018.

Gill, who formerly fought out of the Ingle Gym in Sheffield has decided to switch up his base and will train alongside former WBC cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew, Jamie and Gavin McDonnell, as well as Rio 2016 Olympian Anthony Fowler.

The 23-year-old has amassed a 16-0 record, with 3 stoppages, but by the time he steps into the ring on the September 2nd in Doncaster, will have spent 18 months on the sidelines. Gill explained his decision to Boxing News.

He told us: “I need to be active at this stage of my career and everyone can see how well Dave and his boys are doing, so I went down to see him and he agreed to take me on. It’s a tight knit group, who are successful, so that breeds more success, which will only be a positive for me and spur me on.

“Dave has a proven track record of providing opportunities for his fighters and I needed a change, which we all do from time to time. There is no issue with the Ingles and I have the utmost respect for all of them at Wincobank and we have parted on good terms.

“I’ve had a long time out, in fact some people thought I’d actually retired, but I’ll be back in action in Doncaster on September 2 and then I’m targeting at least one, maybe two more fights before the end of this year. Then in 2018, I’ll be taking that long, overdue step-up in class and I’ll be able to go into those higher calibre of fights, hitting the ground running.”

Gill believes that the less-frantic set-up at Coldwell’s Rotherham headquarters will only set him in good stead and he will be moving down to featherweight, as he looks to demonstrate his potential to a wider audience.

He added that he is looking to testing his skills in his new division, one which he describes as one of the more “interesting” currently domestically. As of yet he has no opponent for his September return but he adds that it doesn’t matter to him, as his sole focus is getting back in the ring.

“The Thrill” also added he is grateful for his support, who have travelled around the UK for him on his journey so far and that his fans are used to putting in the miles to show their support for him on fight night.

Gill added: “Having that one-to-one time with someone like Dave will only benefit me and I’ll be able to see those improvements every day. We’re also going down to featherweight, which is a packed division, many of whom I’ve sparred over the years, for me to get stuck in too.

“We’ll have to wait and see who will be in the opposite corner and I know is actively looking, although we’ve already had a couple of names who have turned it down. At the moment though it doesn’t matter to me, as I’ve got itchy knuckles and want to dust off the cobwebs.

“With it being in Doncaster, my fans will have to travel up, but they’re a great bunch who understand that due to the lack of big names in the area, to get to these big shows which I want to be on, they will have to travel. I’m lucky to have them showing me plenty of support and I’m developing into an exciting fighter, who has a point to prove, hopefully on some TV bills.

“If I prove that’s what I am, and now I have everything in place to be able to do that, then I’ll have a good career and September will be the start of me moving up and showing everybody what I’m about.”
