Benavidez Jr. won a unanimous decision over Francisco Santana last month.
Undefeated welterweight Jose Benavidez Jr. (25-0, 16 KOs) was shot in the leg early Tuesday morning as is being reported by TMZ. The fighter is said to have been out walking one of his pets near his residence in Phoenix, AZ when a unknown assailant approached him and opened fire, striking him in the leg.
Phoenix Police have confirmed the incident and say that Benavidez Jr. was sent to a nearby hospital for injuries which were non-life-threatening. And although that would appear to be great news, at least one source says that his injuries could pose a significant threat to his fighting career. No arrests have been made at this time.
Benavidez Jr., a highly touted prospect, is most recently coming off a decision win over Francisco Santana last month on the Terence Crawford-Viktor Postol undercard. We extend our best wishes to Benavidez and hope for a full and speedy recovery.
