The WBC mini-tournament to decide who gets Terence Crawford’s former title has its first official semifinals. Bob Arum confirmed today that Jose Ramirez will face Amir Imam on Saint Patrick’s Day at Madison Square Garden.
The winner will go on to face the winner of Regis Prograis vs. Viktor Postol, which is presumably still in the works.
Ramirez (21-0, 16 KO), a former Olympian, demolished fellow prospect Mike Reed in two rounds last month. He’s definitely got momentum on his side, as Imam (21-1, 17 KO) has yet to regain the luster he lost in the beatdown Adrian Granados gave him two years ago.
As befitting the date, Michael Conlan will appear on the card against TBA.
Anyone not expecting a Ramirez-Prograis final? Imam’s got power for days and Postol’s win over Lucas Matthysse is the single most impressive feat anyone in the tournament has accomplished, but neither of them have looked good recently.
